Lording It

Theo PilgrimYMCA Digital volunteer and former YMCA resident Theo Pilgrim has had an incredible few months! He was recently selected by The Media Trust along with other young people aged 13-25 to take over the House of Lords on the 10th July where they conducted a debate structured around three issues chosen by them, including talent / celebrity.  Before the actual debate Theo, along with a group of other young people involved in YMCA programmes  took part in a workshop led by a professional trainer in public speaking and debating skills.

This is only the 4th time the House of Lords have allowed members of the public to run a debate in the chamber and was an amazing opportunity for young people to learn about the political process, meet the Lord Speaker and other peers, tour the Houses of Parliament and get their voices heard. Speaking about the debate Theo said “It was excellent, everyone got their point across and I thoroughly enjoyed it”.

What’s more Theo features in a Media Trust produced half-hour documentary which follows the journey of three young people, representative of Britain ’s youth, as they prepare and play a key role in the House of Lords debate. The documentary has been broadcast on the Community Channel and can be found online at...
